Onboard Skatepark Prepares for Opening

For years Sheffield has been crying out for an indoor skatepark to accomodate it’s renowned BMX scene, and now two skateparks are nearing completion. Getabmx previously covered The Industry, a park aimed at technical street riders, and now information about Onboard skatepark can be revealed.

Onboard is a different style of park for all riders (BMX, ’MTB’ skateboard, scooter and inline), which will have an emphasis on flow and speed. The main room of the skatepark is 8000 square feet and there will be a viewing deck, a shop and a cafe.

The skatepark, located on Little London Road, S1, will open on Saturday, the 14th of July with an opening jam to celebrate.

Onboard is run by Amy Cooper, a primary school teacher with two children who had a dream of opening a skatepark to provide young people with a place they can enjoy, so when she was offered a vacant warehouse close to the city centre there was no hesitation.

“Skateparks are a place where children learn etiquette and social skills. When I was taking my kids to skateparks around the country I thought that it would be great to open a skatepark in Sheffield.”

Onboard has no intention of competing with The Industry and Mrs Cooper hopes that the two parks will compliment each other. Paul Edmondson ’Brows’ will manage the park to ensure his influence keeps Onboard current.

While all the features at Onboard have been installed, a number of changes will be made before, and after, opening. After taking on board feedback from riders it was decided that the mini ramp currently at one end of the park will be taken down and replaced with a six foot high wide quarter with a wallride behind it to aid the flow of the park.

With these adjustments Onboard will adapt to accomodate the trails and dirt jump scene and differentiate itself from The Industry.

The skatepark will be open Monday to Sunday from 9am until 9pm and will hold specific nights for different users. Training and coaching opportunities will also be offered.

Membership will cost £15 for a year including a free session, a four session for members will cost £6.50 (£7.50 for non members) while an hour session will cost £3.50. Onboard will also install cameras around the park to broadcast a livestream to their website so that people can see what’s going in the skatepark and determine how busy it is before turning up.

Note that any of the information provided above may be subject to change.

Membership forms will be available from Sunday, the 7th of july, at: http://www.onboardsheffieldskatepark.com/
